Kayla Brown Named to MWC Women's Soccer All-Conference Team

2017 Dec 21

The Midwest Conference (MWC) has announced the 2017 women's soccer all-conference team, including six Knox College players. Jenna Milligan has garnered first team honors and was named the Defensive Player of the Year.. Yvette Rodriguez and Sierra Daniger also made the first team, while Kayla Brown, Angelica Gamez, and Corina Leyva earned a spot on the second team.

Just a sophomore, Milligan becomes the first Knox player to win a major individual MWC award for women's soccer. Milligan led the Prairie Fire to a share of the MWC regular season title. Knox allowed just 13 goals this season, half the number of the closest MWC teams, and produced a goals against average of .598 to go with 13 shutouts. The Knox defense allowed just one goal during MWC regular season play.

Joining Milligan on the first team are repeat winners Yvette Rodriguez and Sierra Daniger. Rodriguez makes her third straight All-MWC appearance and Daniger her second in a row. Daniger's goals against average (.348) places her seventh nationally and her save percentage (.894) ranks tenth in the nation. Rodriguez picked up eight assists on the year, tops in the conference. She also added three goals.

Kayla Brown, Angelica Gamez, and Corina Leyva were all named to the second team. Brown and Gamez both repeat as All-MWC honorees, while Leyva makes her first appearance. Brown again led the team in scoring with 12 goals. She ends her career second on the all-time list at Knox with 50 goals. Leyva finished the year with eight goals and three assists. Her three goals in the conference tournament proved to be the deciding factor in the Prairie Fire earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Gamez added a goal and two assists while also contributing extensively on the defensive end.
